Book Description

Christians confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, and they try to honor him in daily life. The fact that they often fail to honor him shows that they share a common sinful humanity and are in need of God's grace.

The "Second Reformation" in the Netherlands was an attempt to make the daily living of Christians conform to their profession of faith. Similar to Puritanism and other movements dedicated to the deepening of spiritual life in post-Reformation Europe, it greatly influenced the Reformed Church at home and abroad.

The first edition of Spiritual Desertion appeared in 1646, and an improved edition was published in 1659. It was written because of the biblical admonition to rejoice in the Lord and to live victoriously as his children, whereas many fellow Christians manifested a lack of delight in God and were filled with fears and anxieties. The noble intention of Voetius and Hoornbeeck is as relevant today as it was in the seventeenth century. The breakdown of morality, environmental problems, terrorism , and, of course, the perpetual problem of indwelling sin, not to mention other concerns, are certain to generate feelings of spiritual abandonment. The message of Voetius and Hoornbeeck is needed today.
